What Is Spinal Flow Technique?

At Be Flow Studio, one of the most common questions people ask is:

“What exactly is Spinal Flow?”

Spinal Flow Technique is a gentle, nervous system–focused healing modality developed by Dr. Carli Axford. It is based on the understanding that the body already knows how to heal — but stress, trauma, and physical tension can interrupt that natural process.

Spinal Flow works by helping the body release stored stress from the spine so the nervous system can return to a state of balance and flow.

The Nervous System: Your Body’s Master Control System

Your nervous system controls everything in your body — from breathing and digestion to hormone balance, immune function, and emotional regulation.

When your nervous system feels safe and regulated, the body naturally shifts into rest, repair, and healing mode.

But modern life places enormous stress on our systems.

Common stressors include:

• emotional trauma
• chronic stress
• physical injuries
• poor posture
• unresolved tension in the body

Over time, the body may store these stressors within the spine and nervous system.

In Spinal Flow, these stored stress patterns are sometimes referred to as “blockages.”

When blockages accumulate, communication between the brain and body may become disrupted, making it harder for the body to self-regulate and heal.

How Spinal Flow Technique Works

Spinal Flow uses very gentle contacts along specific points of the spine known as access points.

These points communicate directly with the nervous system.

During a session, light touch at these access points helps signal safety to the nervous system. As the body begins to relax, it may start releasing stored stress patterns from the spine.

This process can look different for each person. Some people experience:

• gentle spinal waves
• muscle twitches
• emotional release
• deep relaxation
• warmth or tingling along the spine

These responses are simply the body unwinding stored tension and restoring natural flow.

Nothing is forced or manipulated — the body leads the process.

The Seven Gateways of the Spine

Spinal Flow recognizes seven key areas of the spine, sometimes called gateways, where stress commonly accumulates.

These gateways relate to different regions of the nervous system and may influence various physical or emotional experiences in the body.

When stress builds up in these areas, the nervous system can become stuck in survival mode.

Spinal Flow sessions help the body reconnect these gateways so energy and communication can move freely again.

What Spinal Flow May Support

Because the nervous system influences every system in the body, Spinal Flow may support a wide range of concerns.

Clients often seek care for:

• chronic stress
• nervous system overwhelm
• tension in the neck and shoulders
• fatigue or burnout
• emotional stress
• headaches
• digestive imbalance
• difficulty relaxing

Many people also come simply because they want to feel more connected to their body and experience greater ease in their daily lives.

What a Session Feels Like

A Spinal Flow session is deeply relaxing.

You remain fully clothed and lie comfortably on a treatment table while gentle contacts are applied along the spine.

Most people describe the experience as calming, grounding, and restorative.

Some clients feel changes immediately, while for others the process unfolds gradually as the nervous system learns to release deeper layers of stored stress.

Each session supports the body in returning to its natural state of flow.

A Gentle Approach to Healing

One of the most beautiful aspects of Spinal Flow is its simplicity.

Rather than trying to “fix” the body, the technique works with the body’s innate intelligence.

When the nervous system feels safe and communication through the spine improves, the body often begins to rebalance itself naturally.

Healing becomes less about forcing change and more about allowing the body to do what it already knows how to do.
